Twenty-five-year-old Kenyan baker Barnabas Ndiritu fulfilled a childhood dream to be a pastry chef when he set up his own bakery in the town of Nyeri in central Kenya. He started his new venture at a particularly challenging time – just as the Covid-19 pandemic was taking hold in the country. He has managed to survive and thrive but says there should be much more support for young entrepreneurs. As Kenya prepares to elect a new president and government, Barnabas has been speaking to Focus on Africa’s Karnie Sharp. He would like to see the next administration help small businesses by reducing the fees and taxes imposed on them.
