South Africa and Russia in joint military drills
South Africa is conducting joint naval drills with the Russian and Chinese militaries, despite pressure to condemn Russia from NATO powers. The joint military exercises come after Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov visited South Africa for bilateral talks in January. Pretoria has resisted calls from the United States to join in condemnation of Moscow鈥檚 invasion of Ukraine. Jakkie Cilliers from the Institute of Security Studies discusses South Africa鈥檚 evolving position towards Russia, and how the historical ties between the two countries impact the current political positioning.
