Teaching North East adults to read
A former school teacher says adult literacy levels in the North East are so low, people are unable to read their own medical notes.
The region has some of the lowest literacy levels in the country, with 17% of people aged 16 to 65 thought to be at or below the reading level of a nine to 11 year old, the National Literacy Trust said.
Sharon Barbour meets Kerry Clegg, who was inspired to teach adults to read after seeing a documentary where The Repair Shop presenter Jay Blades learned to read aged 51.
