The day Hull rose up against Mosley鈥檚 Blackshirts

The July 1936 protest against a rally by the British Union of Fascists became known as the Battle of Corporation Field.

On 12 July 1936, the leader of the British Union of Fascists, Sir Oswald Mosley, visited Hull in a bid to recruit new members.
The rally, on a site near what is now St. Stephen鈥檚 shopping centre, was met with a counter-protest by an estimated 10,000 people voicing their opposition to Mosley鈥檚 cause.
It ended in violence, with Mosley and his supporters - called Blackshirts on account of their uniforms - being chased out of town, in what became known as the Battle of Corporation Field.
