The day Hull rose up against Mosley’s Blackshirts

Hidden East Yorkshire

Available for over a year

On 12 July 1936, the leader of the British Union of Fascists, Sir Oswald Mosley, visited Hull in a bid to recruit new members. The rally, on a site near what is now St. Stephen’s shopping centre, was met with a counter-protest by an estimated 10,000 people voicing their opposition to Mosley’s cause. It ended in violence, with Mosley and his supporters - called Blackshirts on account of their uniforms - being chased out of town, in what became known as the Battle of Corporation Field. Presented and produced by Sally Fairfax. Image: Getty.
