Nigeria: Unrest over cash shortages
Police have been deployed to parts of Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos, as unrest continues with people struggling to get hold of new Naira banknotes.
Police have been deployed to parts of Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos, as unrest continues with people struggling to get hold of new Naira banknotes. There have been long queues at many banks, as people attempt to exchange old notes for new currency. The situation prompted President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the deadline for handing in old banknotes by 60 days on Thursday.
Plus, South Africa has begun conducting joint naval drills with China and Russia. The exercises follow the visit of Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov to Pretoria last month, and come as NATO powers are putting pressure on African countries to cut ties with Russia over the invasion of Ukraine.
