A third day of violence across Sudan

The fighting in Sudan follows a rift between the head of the army and the leader of a rival paramilitary group.

The UN special envoy to Sudan has condemned the ongoing violence and called on both sides to pause their hostilities to allow humanitarian access to civilians. The fighting follows a rift between Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hemedti, who is the head of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The regional Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad) is preparing to send the presidents of South Sudan, Djibouti and Kenya to Khartoum to try to negotiate a ceasefire.
