ABOUT THE AWARD
Bodega
2006 winners:
Sandie, Gillian & Norrie of Bodega

Part of Â鶹Éç Radio 2's commitment to nurturing new talent, the Young Folk Award is an annual search for the best budding folk musicians in the UK. The event is open to anyone aged between fifteen and twenty, performing as a band, duo or soloist and performing traditional and acoustic music with roots in any culture.

The event is organised on behalf of Radio 2 by . Successful applicants take part in an exciting semi-final weekend, held in October each year, which provides a fantastic opportunity to meet other performers, attend workshops and enjoy informal music-making. Accommodation and food are provided free of charge and entrants' travel costs are subsidised. On the Saturday evening, a public audition concert takes place, from which the judges select the finalists.

The final, in the form of a concert compered by Mike Harding, is held in December and its highlights and winning performance are broadcast as part of Mike's regular Wednesday night radio show. The winner/s of the competition will record a studio session for the Mike Harding Show, secure slots at the Â鶹Éç Radio 2 Cambridge Folk Festival, Towersey Folk Festival and Fairport's Cropredy Convention, and receive a year's membership of the Musicians' Union.
