Double Bill: Esbjorn Svensson Trio and Dave Holland

Friday 6 August 2004 23:30-1:00 (Radio 3)

Tonight Jazz on 3 begins a six-week summer season giving you another chance to hear the most popular gigs broadcast over the last year. The programme has recently been canvassing the opinion of its listeners who have been calling and writing in with their suggestions. It is an indication of the programme's wide appeal that the two equal top choices were Swedish pop-jazz sensation EST and British godfather of avant-garde saxophone, Evan Parker.

To begin, Jez Nelson presents a double bill from EST and British jazz superstar Dave Holland and his Quintet.

EST's rise to critical and popular acclaim has been swift and well deserved. Playing catchy melodies and sounding more like a rock group than a chamber jazz ensemble, they appeal to a wide audience. Yet they are also admired by jazz aficionados for their creative and virtuoso improvising. Tonight's gig was recorded at the Royal Festival Hall, and was the headline concert on the opening night of the 2003 London Jazz Festival.

The second half of the programme was recorded in front of a packed Barbican Hall, and marked the return of a British jazz prodigal son - virtuoso bass player Dave Holland.

Holland first found wider fame in the late 60s when he was plucked from the stage of Ronnie Scott's Club in London by Miles Davis, and went on to anchor many of the legendary trumpeter's classic recordings. Today Dave leads a very popular quintet that is one of the very few continuously working bands in contemporary jazz. It features Chris Potter on sax, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Steve Nelson on vibraphone and marimba, and Billy Kilson on drums.
