Tippett was always ready to talk about his work and about the events, external and internal, which influenced it and this programme contains material previously broadcast in Â鶹Éç radio and television programmes featuring Sir Michael. There are frank comments about his political idealism, his pacifism, his homosexuality, his dreams and the suicide of one of his closest friends.
The programme is illustrated with Tippett's music often in rare archive recordings. They include Joan Sutherland singing Jenifer in the original 1955 Covent Garden production of Tippett's first opera The Midsummer Marriage and recordings soon to be commercially available of Tippett's First Piano Sonata played by Phyllis Sellick and the Concerto for Double String Orchestra conducted by Tippett's associate Walter Goehr, both made in the 1940s.
