  • Explain the Vikings’ reasons for sailing and going to new lands
  • Explore why the longship design was so successful
  • Explain that the sun, stars and landmarks were used for navigation by the Vikings
  • Identify that raiding and trading were the main reasons for exploring new lands
  • Understand that raiding was unfriendly whereas trading was friendly and civilised.
  • Describe the features of a longship which make it so successful for example strength, narrow shape and lightweight

  • Recall that Viking longhouses were made of wood or stone and mud
  • Remember that the Vikings had many jobs
  • Pinpoint some of the following Viking jobs: raider, fisherman, farmer
  • Describe that literature and archaeological evidence has been left in Scotland showing the presence of Vikings here;
  • Recognise the Viking influence in some common words
  • Identify the Viking alphabet;
  • Recognise that the Viking alphabet is called runes;

  • Identify some toys and games that the Vikings played with
  • Explain the similarities between the games we play today and Viking ones
  • Explain that the evidence from archaeologists tells us about this
