Rephotography - Devil鈥檚 Elbow, Glenshee
Landscape photographer Colin Prior and Dougie Vipond continue their exploration of the ever-changing Scottish landscape. Euan follows the journey of the famous Edinburgh Christmas tree from felling in the forest to the switch-on of lights. Find out if the Young family are ready to part with their feathered friends in the final instalment of Landward's 'Turkey for Christmas' series.
Colin Prior rephotographs a postcard showing a royal trip up Glenshee's notorious double hairpin bend, the Devil's Elbow.
The road leads up to the Cairnwell Pass, the UK鈥檚 highest main road. In the 1960s the road was straightened but some of the original section of hairpin bends is still visible next to the main road.
The original photo shows the Queen鈥檚 Daimler driving up the Devil鈥檚 Elbow with Prince Philip at the wheel.
Highland Group
Highland is one of Scotland鈥檚 32 unitary council areas. It is the largest local government area in both Scotland and the United Kingdom as a whole.
The area was created as a two-tier region in 1975 with Highland Region being divided into eight districts, Badenoch and Strathspey, Caithness, Inverness, Lochaber, Nairn, Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh and Sutherland.
In 1996, Highland Regional Council and the district councils were wound up and their functions were transferred to a new Highland Council. It borders Moray, Aberdeenshire, Perth and Kinross, and Argyll and Bute.
