Hassan Khan is a blind tennis fan, and he can enjoy the sport without any commentary thanks to three things – “the squeak of a player’s boot, how the ball hits the racquet and the player’s grunting”. His attention to those details mean he sometimes knows what has happened before the players know themselves. “I’ve called it out before he’s shouted, because I can tell he’s overcooked it,” he says. Blind since the age of three, Hassan has never seen a backhand. He says he doesn’t like to ask questions as he doesn’t want to spoil the enjoyment of others around him.
