A 10,000-year-old massacre

Newsday

Available for over a year

27 men, women and children brutally killed. Their bodies spread out by the shores of a lagoon. This mass killing -- which happened some ten thousand years ago-- is the earliest evidence of deadly violence between prehistoric hunter-gatherers. The results of that discovery, made in 2012, have just been published in the journal Nature. The research was co-authored by Professor Robert Foley of Cambridge University, here in the UK : (Caption : This skeleton was that of a man, found lying prone in the lagoon's sediments. The skull has multiple lesions on the front and on the left side, consistent with wounds from a blunt implement, such as a club. Credit: Image by Marta Mirazon Lahr, enhanced by Fabio Lahr )
