A rich and varied work, with a much-admired last movement, Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 announces itself in strident style. This work is god-like, full of power, light, and jollity. It came to be known as ‘Jupiter’ on account of the fact that its opening chords suggested thunderbolts to some, which might have been thrown by that Roman deity. In the positive key of C major, Mozart gives us life-affirming music and his last symphony.
