A Kenyan court has ruled that men can have custody of children below ten years for the first time. Traditionally, when there is a dispute between the two parents, courts have automatically given custody of children younger than ten to the mother, known as the "tender years doctrine". But this new ruling changed that. The court says parental responsibility should follow the best interests of the child. Kavraj Kaur Sagoo is a lawyer at Kavraj Kaur Associates who filed the case at Nakuru Court; she tells Focus on Africa's Paul Bakibinga how significant this ruling is in changing how parental custody is granted in Kenya.
