The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, has been in Sudan investigating war crimes committed during the rule of the ousted president, Omar al Bashir. Human rights groups have long accused Bashir of using a “scorched earth policy'” against his opponents, involving rape, killing and torture.
