Shell barred from South Africa oil exploration project

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Sinegugu Zukulu from SWC Sustaining the Wild Coast speaks to Focus on Africa’s Audrey Brown, after a court in South Africa ruled that Shell can’t explore for oil and gas in the area. The oil company had been granted a permit to carry out an oceanic seismic survey off South Africa’s Indian Ocean coast in 2014, but environmental campaigners warned it would damage marine life in the area. Shell says it respects the court’s decision and is reviewing its next steps. (Photo: A protest against Shell’s proposed oceanic seismic survey in December 2021; Credit: Getty Images)
