The Deputy Mayor of Kampala has announced on Twitter that she will stand in Uganda’s 2026 presidential election. Online platforms are a key component of Doreen Nyanjura’s campaign strategy but her presence there comes at a price. She told Newsday: “I’ve faced a lot of backlash. First because I’m a female…second because I’m a young female politician…third because I am not married and that raises a lot of eyebrows…There are so many young women who are fearing to offer themselves for leadership because they are going to be questioned on why they are not married.
