Liban's father and his aunt were killed in an ambush in Somalia, his homeland. Civil war and ongoing violence between rival clan-based militias has decimated thousands of people in Somalia.

Anna, from Hungary, was sexually abused by her alcoholic stepfather. Her mother couldn't bear the violence at home and escaped, leaving her five children behind. Anna now lives in a children's home near Lake Balaton.

Jeanine used to survive on food that her family scavenged from a rubbish tip. When she began living at a humanitarian centre, she was able to receive schooling, food and clothing.

Fact A child is entitled to safety from violence. The UN Convention recognises the family home as the best environment for a child's well being.

Fact If a child is deprived of a home, he or she needs protection.

Fact The government undertakes to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse.

Fact It shall also take measures to prevent the sale of children and refrain from recruiting children under 15-years into the armed forces.

Fact No child shall be deprived of liberty. A child's detention shall be in conformity with the law.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child came into force on 2 September 1990.
