Power Eating Computers To become part of the digital world you need to have access to electrical power in some way. But many villages in remote parts of the world, and people living in the poorer parts of cities, are not linked up to a national grid, or have locally-generated power only at certain times of the day.
In Go Digital, Gareth Mitchell reports on the latest attempts to connect everyone in the world. He talks to the developers of the Nndiyo system which is a stripped down computer that draws very little power; looks at whether fuel cell technology is ready to run mobile phones, PDAs and even laptops, and what are the ways of firing up the Wi Max base stations that can connect anyone anywhere to the internet? Also, projects in South Africa and Angola which are bridging the last mile to connect up the remote areas.
