FACTS
The
first Bradford Mela took place in 1988 . It is the oldest
in the UK.
The
word Mela comes from Sanskrit and means "to meet."
People
come to Bradford from across the world to learn how to stage
a successful Mela.
Welcome
to Bradford! Have you played at Bradford Mela before?
I've played here a couple of years ago. I came down with Apache
Indian and it was a hectic crowd!
What
are you expecting from today's crowd?
The weather is good. Because of that, I'm expecting a lot of people
to turn up and basically I'm looking for everyone to really enjoy
themselves.
You've
played at a lot of Melas around the country, where does Bradford
rank?
You know what, whenever you come to Bradford to do the Mela it's
always out of anyone's league because Bradford alone is known for
the Mela. Whenever you go down south or to the Midlands they don't
rank anywhere near Bradford because of the crowd. As soon as you
walk on stage and see a massive crowd in front of you it's totally
different.
What
tracks have you got lined up for today's performance?
I've got a couple of my own tracks. I'm including the one I did
with Apache Indian and the well-known Punjabi tracks. On top of
that we're going to be doing tracks by well-known artists - they're
songs people really like.
Are
you coming back next year for a bit more?
No problem! Whenever Bradford gives us a shout we'll come down!
