Concert Information
We reach the end of our Nielsen cycle with the composer鈥檚 sixth, most quixotic symphony. While his intention was to express something 鈥榗ompletely idyllic鈥, the idyll is infiltrated by irony, violence and doubt in the face of the composer鈥檚 own failing health. Following a phantasmagorical Humoreske, death comes knocking in a final set of variations, by turns sinister and hilarious. A night of contrasts, from John Foulds鈥檚 paen to the raw vitality of spring to Sibelius鈥檚 evocation of forest spirits, Tapiola, which prefaces Rachmaninov鈥檚 soulful Fourth Piano Concerto, played by Denis Kozhukin, 鈥榓lready in the company of the greats鈥. Le soir.
