You've snuck into the Jockeys' Changing Rooms just before they put
on their colours (which you'll see hanging up on the pegs)...
The Jockeys' Changing Rooms are their inner sanctum where they are
cut off from all others on raceday, except when they are out in the
paddock and on the horses.
This is where they relax, prepare for their races, eat, joke, talk,
take the mickey, celebrate victory and console each other following
defeat.
They also have a quiet room next door, which generally turns out to
be the loudest room in the place as it houses their TV which shows
action from other race meetings going on around the country – Often,
there will be a throng of them cheering on their colleagues at racecourses
all over the UK.
Apart from officials and the jockeys’ valets, who arrive early to
get all the kit ready, no-one else has access to this part of the
racecourse.
The Jockeys’ kit involves saddles, breeches, helmets, whips, tights!,
body protectors, girths, lead cloths, colours, hat silks and this
generally turns the place into an array of colour. |
