Forget standing on the scales - if you're a jockey you get a seat!

Under the close scrutiny of the Clerk of the Scales... Each horse carries a certain weight – the lighter the better – and in handicap races each horse is set a weight.

The jockeys have to ‘weigh out’ before each race and if they do not weigh enough they will make up the difference with lead weights.

If they weigh too much it is back to the sauna to sweat off the extra pounds. They also have to "weigh-in" out after each race and the Clerk of the Scales will check that the weight has not changed. If it has, the horse will lose the race.
