An Litir Bheag 809

Cho binn ri sme貌rach air geug. As melodious as a song thrush on a branch. Tha m鈥 aire air an sme貌raich anns an Litir seo. Bheir sinn s霉il air d脿 dh脿n ainmeil anns a bheil sme貌rach. Chaidh an sgr矛obhadh le b脿ird chli霉iteach.

鈥橲 e a鈥 chiad bh脿rd Iain mac Fhearchair 鈥檌c 脤omhair 脿 Uibhist a Tuath. Bidh sibh e貌lach air 鈥檚 d貌cha mar Iain MacCodruim. B鈥 e am fear eile Alasdair mac Mhaighstir Alasdair.聽

Innsidh mi dhuibh mu MhacCodruim an toiseach, agus an d脿n aige 鈥楽me貌rach Chlann D貌mhnaill鈥. Seo an t-s猫ist:

Hoilibheag hilibheag h贸 ail il 贸, Hoilibheag hilibheag h贸 r贸 i,

Hoilibheag hilibheag h贸 ail il 贸, Sme貌rach le Clann D貌mhnaill mi.

Chan eil ann an Hoilibheag hilibheag ach briathran gun bhr矛gh, no 貌ran na sme貌raich.

Carson a bha ball de Chlann 鈥檌c Codruim a鈥 sgr矛obhadh mu Chlann D貌mhnaill? Uill, bha ceann-cinnidh nan D貌mhnallach a鈥 toirt taic mh貌r do dh鈥橧ain. Seo mar a thachair e.

Sgr矛obh Iain d矛-mholadh mu obair th脿illearan Uibhist. Bha na t脿illearan feargach. Dhi霉lt iad uile aon ghr猫im eile fhuaigheal don bh脿rd. An ceann greis, bha aodach Iain robach.

Chunnaic an ceann-cinnidh, An Ridire Seumas D貌mhnallach, e. 鈥楥arson a tha do chuid aodaich a鈥 tuiteam 脿s a ch猫ile, Iain?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich e. Dh鈥檃ithris Iain a鈥 bh脿rdachd a chuir fearg air na t脿illearan. 鈥橲 d貌cha gun robh an ceann-cinnidh a鈥 gabhail dragh gun sgr矛obhadh Iain rudeigin dhen aon se貌rsa mu dheidhinn-san. Co-dhi霉, thug e obair is 脿ite-fuirich dha!

Aig toiseach Sme貌rach Chlann D貌mhnaill, tha am b脿rd ga chur fh猫in ann an riochd sme貌raich. Tha an t-eun br貌nach. Anns an d脿rna rann, ge-t脿, tha an sme貌rach ga lorg fh猫in ann an suidheachadh nas fhe脿rr:

Sme貌rach mis鈥 air mullach beinne, 鈥檊 amharc gr猫in is speuran soilleir;
Thig mi st貌lda ch貌ir na coille, 鈥檚 bidh mi be貌 air tre貌das eile.

Anns an leabhar aice 鈥Songs of Gaelic Scotland鈥, tha Anna Latharna NicGill脤osa ag r脿dh gur d貌cha gu bheil an t-atharrachadh bho bhr貌n gu d貌chas a鈥 comharrachadh beatha a鈥 bh脿ird fh猫in. Carson? Uill, innsidh mi dhuibh an-ath-sheachdain.

The Little Letter 809

Cho binn ri sme貌rach air geug. As melodious as a song thrush on a branch. My attention is on the thrush in this Litir. We鈥檒l look at two famous poems in which there is a thrush. They were written by renowned poets.

The first poet is Iain mac Fhearchair 鈥檌c 脤omhair from North Uist. You will perhaps know him as John MacCodrum. The other was Alasdair mac Mhaighstir Alasdair.

I鈥檒l tell you about MacCodrum to begin with, and his poem 鈥榯he thrush of Clan Donald鈥. Here is the chorus:

Hoilibheag hilibheag h贸 ail il 贸, Hoilibheag hilibheag h贸 r贸 i,

Hoilibheag hilibheag h贸 ail il 贸, Sme貌rach le Clann D貌mhnaill mi.

Hoilibheag hilibheag are just vocables, or the song of the thrush.聽

Why was a member of the MacCodrums writing about Clan Donald? Well, the chief of the MacDonalds was giving John strong support. Here鈥檚 how it transpired.

John wrote [a] dispraise [poem] about the work of Uist tailors. The tailors were angry. They refused to sew one more stitch for the poet. In due course John鈥檚 clothes were tattered.

The clan chief, Sir James MacDonald, saw him. 鈥榃hy are your clothes falling apart, John?鈥 he asked. John recited the poetry that [had] angered the tailors. Perhaps the clan chief was worried that John would write something of the same ilk about him! Anyway, he gave him work and a place to stay!

At the beginning of Sme貌rach Chlann D貌mhnaill, the bard puts himself in the guise of a thrush. The bird is sad. In the second verse, however, the thrush finds itself in a better situation:

I am a thrush on a mountaintop, Looking at the sun and clear skies;

I shall come steadily to the wood, And I shall live on other sustenance.

In her book 鈥楽ongs of Gaelic Scotland鈥, Anne Lorne Gillies says that perhaps the change from sadness to reflects the poet鈥檚 own life. Why? Well, I鈥檒l tell you next week.
