On the second Sunday of Advent, Claire McCollom continues a series unpacking the themes of the season. On a visit to Coventry Cathedral, she explores peace – from its rich meaning in the Bible to what it can mean in practice today.
Claire discovers the remarkable story and legacy of Coventry Cathedral, and how it was almost totally destroyed in World War II but then rebuilt in the name of peace and forgiveness – not revenge. Since then, it’s become a beacon of reconciliation. Claire joins local school children engaging with one of the cathedral’s many peace projects.
Theologian Kris Kandiah explains the meaning of peace in the Bible and how the Hebrew word shalom, which translates as peace, can also be understood as wholeness and tranquillity.
Finally, Claire speaks to a Christian leader in Birmingham who found inner peace through her faith. After a troubled few years, Rachel Hughes turned to the teachings of the Bible and has discovered the deep healing and fulfilment they can provide.
