Mercan Dede
MERCAN DEDE (TURKEY/CANADA)

Mercan Dede album cover
Mercan Dede鈥檚 autumn 2006 visit to London found him packing premier London concert hall The Barbican, his graceful mix of electronica and Turkish Sufi music making the audience dance until they too became whirling dervishes 鈥 Mercan tours with his own whirling dervishes!

Dede鈥檚 had a profile on the North American dance music scene for several years now, primarily as techno DJ Arkin Allen, but more recently he鈥檚 been noticed by the world music market as a man who can help connect a Western audience with the ancient musical culture of Sufism. Dede鈥檚 profile is rising with his appearances in the Channel 4 documentary on Sufi Soul: The Mystic Music Of Islam and the German-Turkish film Crossing The Bridge: The Sound Of Istanbul.

What makes Dede unique is his pioneering attempts at building musical bridges between Turkish Sufism and contemporary Western electronic music. Sufism is Islam鈥檚 most mystical and musical sect and one Dede believes can help create harmony in this time of violence and fear.

Dede 鈥 real name Akin Alical - is Turkish born and trained as a photographer but has resided for some time in Montreal. Dede is an accomplished musician, playing the ney (reed flute), bendir, frame drum, zarb and udu drum, and has produced several CDs: Sufi Dreams (1997), Journey of a Dervish (1999), Seyahatname (2001), NAR (2002), Sufi Traveller (2004), Su (2005) and Breathe (2006).

Dede believes the traditional Sufi understanding of music as a means to uplift and harmonize the soul is reflected in the rave/nightclub scenes of Europe and North America. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 like the separation,鈥 says Dede. 鈥淭he Sufi poet Rumi has a very good saying: 鈥業f you are everywhere, you are nowhere. If you are somewhere, you are everywhere.鈥 My somewhere is my heart. I try to figure it out. The rest鈥攖he hype, the trends鈥攖hey are not important. Instead of talking about war in Iraq, if you can make a sound of a small instrument from an Iraqi village, you can tell people more about what is going on there. For me, the future is electronic and folkloric.鈥

Mercen Dede is one of the most talented musician I have ever seen and heard him on the stage. His style of Sufi music is second to none and Yet there is more than the score you listen to...You have to be present in the hall where there such a vibration in air. Like Magic! Only has to be experienced live to be understood.

The Music of Love Hail to thee, then, O Love, sweet madness! Thou who healest all our infirmities! Who art the Physician of our pride and self-conceit! Who art our Plato and our Galen! Love exalts our earthly bodies to heaven, And makes the very hills to dance with joy! O lover, 'twas Love that gave life to Mount Sinai, When "it quaked, and Moses fell down in a swoon." Did my Beloved only touch me with His lips, I too, like a flute, would burst out into melody.

Mercan has my vote !! This album (Breath) is great and it certainly deserves this word as a title. If want to learn about Sufi teachings/philosophy, please check out Rumi鈥檚 poetry (a 16th century Sufi master).
