Francis Bowyer
Francis Bowyer "... there are characters that I hate and love, and that reflects in my afternoon's painting."

I listen to The World at One which gives me all the news, current affairs, that I need for the day.

Then I stay on for a bit of sanity with the everyday story of country folk, The Archers at 2.00pm. I have listened to it (more on than off) for 25 years. What is brilliant about it is that there are characters that I hate and love, and that reflects in my afternoon's painting: red in anger, Brian Aldridge lying through his teeth; or there could be a bit of sexual innuendo. Then blue in calm: washes on paper as Clarrie is having a good day.

If I have had a bad or a good morning's painting it helps balance my mind for the afternoon onslaught. It has changed over the 25 years - life has got faster and more sensational, and so have the story-lines. But I am still addicted!!
Francis Bowyer was born in 1952 in London. He studied at St Martins School of Art and Chelsea School of Art in London. He has taught drawing and painting part-time at all levels up to postgraduate and is currently teaching at the Royal Academy Schools and Richmond Adult Community College. Like many other previous Presidents of the Royal Watercolour Society, Francis Bowyer comes from a family of artists; both his parents, his brother and his wife are all painters or designers. He himself spent a few years designing toys before returning to paint his pictures, which are full of colour and light. Much of his painting is does at Walberswick, where the Bowyer family has a home.
