Ìý"I have chosen a work completed earlier this year Ìýdepicting the Grand Canal of Venice. I am an amateur artist and work from home. As a result, the radio is a vital companion to the solitude of such work. Venice in winter, Ìýparticularly at night, has an eerie silence ... just the lapping of the water against the old stone buildings and covered gondolas. Art can be a very self-obsessed occupation. Having some external, in this case, sound, whether it be words or music, relieves the tension and often allows the work to flow. Art needs to be both Ìýinspirational and impulsive and RadioÌý4 aids the fulfillment of this self-indulgent activity. We are partners in crime."
