Intimate Letters
by Peter Blathwayt
"I usually have the radio on when painting and drawing - Ìýmainly Radio 3. I find that an enriched sound-world enriches my visual adventures too, like exploring a forest! Sometimes the music sparks a drawing. Listening recently to Janácek's string quartet
Intimate Letters
, I imagined a pile of them, a "solidified history"; and I sketched as the music played. From this came an oil painting. Once I listened to a French broadcast of Fauré's
Requiem
, barely audible through a blizzard of static; the difficult reception itself became part of an art piece. To me, radio is magic!"
