"Radio 4 is a constant presence in my studio. I can usually Ìýcall to mind the stories or important events which occurred on the radio during a particular painting. This chair is often occupied by the Radio 4 story teller, commentator or newsreader. During many of the hours spent on this painting the Test matches were reaching Ìýtheir climax this summer. Frequently I thought of the chair as representing the one the batsman has recently left in the pavilion, awaiting his return."
