"When painting non-representational art (particularly), in my garden studio, it is Radio 4 that rides in tandem alongside my thought processes. Sometimes, it leads, sometimes pushes, unseeingly from behind, but always there is a cross-flow of images articulated from some absorbing voices filling my studio (and head) with an amazing variety of suggested colour and shape. As a part-time musician, I cannot let the music channels interfere with my hand to eye co-ordination. In any case, there has been a dumbing down in general in those departments and Radio 4 alone challenges the intellect. Amusingly, the radio is sometimes misplaced amongst the increasing junk and the voices sooner or later become part of the interior objects as if the room itself is speaking - then I am in 'the zone'."
