Ìý"Since I paint mainly in the evenings, I often hear Sailing By - that dreamy tune which precedes the Shipping Forecast at 00.48am - at the end of a long studio session, usually to the clinking accompaniment of brushes being washed in a jam jar. Towards finishing Night Passing, I left the studio for a few minutes to take another look at the Ìýpattern of street lights that I was trying to paint. Outside I had the strange sensation of the night moving like a dark veil over the town and the three red lights of our local transmitter mast shining like a beacon, sending out the radio waves that I had been receiving. Sailing By was playing on the radio as I returned to add the lights to the painting."
