"Radio 4 is like a room full of interesting friends that don't Ìýmind if I don't reply to anything they say. Many of my ideas come from chance remarks from the people and programmes I hear every day. I am surrounded by possibilities from the huge world outside while I paint alone in my studio, think and enjoy myself. When I'm stuck on a Ìýpainting, I find great encouragement from the ordinary folk who have dared and won and appear on the radio just for me. And when I need silence, I can turn it off and no one minds."
