Christ and the singing worms, from 'Birthday' by Billy Collins by Anthea Gage
"I can find myself painting in the studio for long periods of time, occasionally eleven hours at a stretch. With RadioÌý4 on, and wearing headphones, I feel that the programmes Ìýare there for me alone and people are sharing their Ìýfeelings and stories quietly in my ears. Indeed sometimes it can be so painful or horrific that I cannot work through tears. I first heard Billy Collins, the American poet, on RadioÌý4 and have done several paintings from his poems. RadioÌý4 distracts a part of my mind that can be over analytical or judgmental, and allows the more creative Ìýunconscious to surface. I love it and can't work without it."
