"I paint murals and frequently find myself working in rather large houses, entirely on my own, high on scaffolding in Ìýechoing rooms empty of furniture. I can’t work in a vacuum empty of sound. But music is no good; it’s too Ìýemotionally involving and it may have rhythm, encouraging me sway and dance in time – not good for painting. However, I do listen to Radio 4 all day long and, being alone, I’m uninhibited in my behaviour and interact by shouting abuse at commentators or actors in plays who annoy me and congratulating those with whom I’m in full agreement."
