The word bamboo is thought to be from Malay. It appears in English in the 16th Century.
The word robot was first introduced by the Czech writer Karel ÄŒapek in his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), published in 1920. The play begins in a factory that makes artificial people called robots.
