Siberia's Gas Towns

The Yamal peninsula in north west Siberia has been supplying gas to Russia and neighbouring countries since the 1970s, and contains Russia's largest known untapped gas reserves.

It's also home to the Nenets, an indigenous people who live from reindeer-herding.

In the first report we hear from the region's 'gas towns', built in the 1970s and a magnet for people from all over the former Soviet Union because of high wages and job opportunities.

We also follow gas production back to its source at a gas drying/purifying facility.

In the second report we experience the hunter/gatherer lifestyle of the Nenets, now threatened by 21st century energy demands, as gas production and livestock compete for the same territory.
