"As a printmaker and illustrator I need solitude to be creative, but the big disadvantage of this is the lack of Ìýcamaraderie and conversation. A programme such as Start the Week is a wonderful substitute for a stimulating discussion with colleagues, while The Archers admirably replaces office gossip. Thought-provoking programmes provide an ambient philosophical framework for what is an almost meditative process. Cutting a block or painting a surface, I eschew conscious thought and am practically incapable of speech, yet I am in a focused and mentally Ìýreceptive state, to which the radio contributes on an almost subliminal level."
